The Minister of defence, Estonia jüri Luik said about the preparation of Russia’s armed conflict in the Western direction. He said this at the conference in memory of former President Lennart Meri, reports Postimees.
Luik pointed to the fact that Russia has formed seven new military regiments in the Western military district in 2018. According to him, they are deployed in the distance less than 50 kilometers from the border.
He expressed the opinion that Moscow is restoring a global military reach, lost in the last years of the Soviet Union. The Minister stressed that Russia hopes to weaken NATO in the coming years.
In addition, Luik criticized the decision of the Council of Europe to support the restoration of voting rights in the organization. “I expect that in a short time in the agenda the following may be submitted the question of the abolition of EU sanctions against Russia”, — he said.
On may 9 the Minister of internal Affairs of Estonia, Mart Helme, said that Russia did not return and is not going to return Estonia’s 5.2 percent of the territory, probably referring to territory, including Ivangorod and part of the Pechora district of the Pskov region, which belonged to Estonia under the Tartu Treaty. Later, Prime Minister jüri Ratas announced the achievement of a consensus on this issue.
