Ukraine’s new President Vladimir Zelensky, speaking in Parliament on 20 may immediately after his inauguration, urged officials not to hang in the offices of his portrait. The broadcast of the inauguration and the President’s speech led the TV channel “112 Ukraine”.
Zelensky promised to build a country “other opportunities” after having come to power, “the people who will serve the people,” and added that his portrait should not hang in the offices. His request, he explained that “the President is not an icon, not an idol”.
In the place where you would normally hang a picture of the head of state, Zelensky suggested that the officials and deputies “to post pictures of their children and before each decision to look them in the eye”.
Speaking of children, Zelensky also told the story about his son, who after the election went to the father and said that he is President now, too. “Then it looked like a children’s joke. Now it looks like the truth,” said the new head of state, stating that now every citizen of Ukraine is the President.
The inauguration of Vladimir Zelensky was held on 20 may. The ceremony came all the former presidents of Ukraine, except for Viktor Yanukovych.
During his inaugural speech the new President of Ukraine announced the dissolution of Parliament, giving MPs two months to fulfill its requirements — resignation of the government, the abolition of parliamentary immunity, the adoption of the law on illicit enrichment.
The ceremony ended with the speaker of Parliament Andriy Parubiy, who called the ceremony “fun”.
