The trade confrontation between the US and China contributed to sales growth American garlic after for many years this product has been losing to cheaper imports from China. About it reports Reuters.
American garlic producers benefit from trade restrictions, since it focus mainly on the domestic market. So, sales of the largest commercial grower of garlic in USA — Christopher Ranch company — in the fourth quarter of 2018 grew by 15 percent. This happened after the introduction of the 10 percent duties on goods from China.
The farmers expect that the demand for the product will increase because of the decision to toughen the restrictions which the United States adopted just weeks before the start of the harvest season of garlic. “The time [for entering fees] could be better,” said CEO Ken Christopher. He added that, ideally, would like to protective duties remained “forever”.
The situation with the garlic is the exception rather the rule. Other American farmers, particularly producers of soy and corn, suffer from a trade confrontation because heavily dependent on exports to China. The situation worsened in 2018, when China imposed a 25 percent duty on agricultural products from the United States. It was a response to a 30 percent tariff on solar panels that China exports to the United States.
A new round of trade conflict between the United States and China occurred in 2019, when the parties mutually increased sales tax on certain goods, including garlic. Washington has lifted duties on imports from China in the amount of $ 200 billion. Retaliatory Chinese restrictions affected products from the US 60 billion.
