An international team of astronomers from Russia and Germany have identified an unusual object J005311, which is a result of the merger of two white dwarfs. Anomalous star is located in the centre of the nebula that emits infrared radiation. In the future, its existence can end in a major explosion. About it reported in a press release on Phys.org.
The researchers analyzed the spectrum of radiation emitted by the nebula and the Central star, located ten thousand light-years from Earth. It turned out that the object did not contain neither hydrogen nor helium, which is typical for white dwarfs.
However, it continues the process of burning heavier elements in white dwarfs does not occur. Astronomers came to the conclusion that J005311 formed in the collision of two circling dwarfs that have approached each other, losing energy in the form of gravitational waves.
J005311 40 thousand times brighter than the Sun, and it emits a strong stellar wind at a speed of 16 thousand kilometers per second. According to calculations, it speeds up a strong magnetic field. According to the researchers, these objects have to meet in the milky Way are very rare.
It is expected that in a few thousand years, the entire mass of the star becomes iron, and combustion will cease. Under the influence of its own gravity it will begin to shrink, will flash, and will form a neutron star.
