US urges Turkey to abandon the purchase of Russian anti-aircraft missile complexes (AAMS) s-400 in the next two weeks. It is reported by CNBC, citing sources familiar with the situation.
Washington insists that Ankara had canceled the deal with Moscow to end the first week of June. Instead of the s-400 to Turkey is to purchase an American missile defense system “Patriot”.
If the Turkish authorities refuse to do so, the country will have to exit the program production fighter fifth generation F-35. Turkey will not have already ordered 100 planes and may fall under sanctions by the US and NATO.
A source in the Department confirmed that this is the final requirement of the United States. If Turkey does not fulfill it, the country will face serious negative consequences. The Ministry said that NATO countries need to buy military equipment that is compatible with other systems Alliance, and the Russian s-400 will not meet this standard.
May 16, Turkey stated that it will not integrate s-400 in the NATO system. Ankara will have full control of SAM.
In April, Washington was already talking about refusal to supply the F-35 in Turkey, if the country still will buy Russian air defense system. In the United States and other NATO countries fear that if Ankara armed with will and With-400, and F-35, the Russian radar systems will learn to calculate and track the American fighters.
A contract to supply Ankara with the four battalions of s-400 was achieved in September 2017. The contract is worth $ 2.5 billion, but half of this amount will cover the Russian loan.
