Functions of the security Service of Ukraine (SBU) it is necessary to limit counterintelligence, counterterrorism and the protection of state secrets. This was stated by the Deputy head of the delegation of the European Union in Kiev, Annika Weidemann, reports “Interfax-Ukraine”.
“At the same time, the SBU needs to lose functions in the field of economic and organized crime”, — said Weidemann, adding that reform needs to be done as soon as possible.
According to her, this is necessary in order to increase the level of trust at the international level and domestically. In addition, she expressed the hope that the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky and future composition of the Verkhovna Rada will continue the transformation of the judicial and law enforcement sectors, which was conducted in recent years.
Full reform must also apply to bodies of Prosecutor’s office, said Weidemann. Among other things, she hoped that the new leadership of Ukraine will remain faithful to the course in NATO and the EU.
Earlier, on 15 may, it was reported that Kiev intends to invite the European Union to revise the Association agreement concluded in 2014. The Ukrainian government explained that since the initial consultation “has changed the structure of the economy”, that allows to speak about the need for revision.
In July 2017 Ukraine has called for reform of the SBU. Thus, the head of the EU delegation in Kiev said that the security Service does nothing to combat corruption.
