A referendum on the format of negotiations with Russia, which Ukraine’s new President Vladimir Zelensky announced earlier, will have no legal force. This is stated in the statement Zelensky, published on the official website of the presidential administration.
As noted, the corresponding statement the President made during a meeting with public activists, volunteers and the military, which took place in the building of his administration. Zelensky said that the goal of this initiative is to know the opinion of citizens of Ukraine on the issue of dialogue with Russia. “This is a normal conversation with people,” said Zelensky, noting that the government needs “to hear everyone”.
The President indicated that his administration is committed to open dialogue with society and wants to make decisions behind closed doors. The initiative, according to the participants, should be described not as a referendum, and as the all-Ukrainian poll.
On the possibility of holding a referendum on the format of negotiations with Russia the head of administration of Vladimir Zelensky and former associate of the oligarch Igor Kolomoisky Andrei Bogdan announced the day after the inauguration ceremony, may 21. This initiative was due to the fact that the decision should be taken by not only the President and the deputies, and all the people of Ukraine.
In the Kremlin, commenting on the proposal, said that Moscow expects from Kyiv on concrete steps towards improving bilateral relations.
