Fired Russian mayor of Riga became a member of the European Parliament

The Latvian party “Consent”, headed by former mayor of Riga nil Ushakov, the results of the elections to the European Parliament received two of the mandate, follows from the data published on the website of Tsentrizbirkoma Latvia.

The party list was headed by nil Ushakov. The second mandate from his party, former Deputy Ushakov, Vice-mayor of Riga Andris Ameriks. Both are up to 2024 will be the MEPs. This will give them parliamentary immunity and avoid prosecution at the ongoing 2013 investigations related to the corruption scandal at the municipal enterprises of Riga.

Investigation of fraud against Ushakov was started a few days after his dismissal from the post of mayor of the Latvian capital. According to the authorities, he violated the law on capital shares of public persons and the management of commercial companies, the law on prevention of squandering of the financial resources and property of public persons, the law on accounting and on the management of budgets and finances, and the law on local government budgets.

Nil Ushakov was dismissed from the post of mayor of Riga on 5 April. The decision was made personally by the Minister of regional development of Latvia Juris puce. The official reason for the dismissal was called “non-compliance with statutory obligations and violation of regulations.”

Ushakov himself called his dismissal “illegal and unprofessional”. According to the former mayor, his dismissal is to punish politicians who lost the election to the city Council two years ago. Ushakov intends to appeal against the decision to dismiss.
