The President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky accused the deputies of the Verkhovna Rada in the destruction of the legitimacy of the Ukrainian Parliament. The President’s statement was published on his personal page in Facebook.
According to the head of the state, the reason of falling of trust of the Ukrainian society to the Parliament was the activity of the Verkhovna Rada of the eighth convocation. Nevertheless, he believes that the deputies still have the opportunity “a little bit to restore the public’s confidence in representative democracy”. For this, according to Zelensky, in the remaining two months of work of Parliament must cease to use the platform of Parliament for “personal PR” or as the site of the election campaign.
Instead, he advises to begin consideration of bills on the reforms developed in the United States, Europe and Ukraine. Zelensky said that the inclusion of the documents in the agenda of the Parliament is delayed for years, despite the fact that consideration expects the whole country. The President also urged MPs not to spoil the bills their “traditional corruption tricks” in case the Parliament will begin their review.
21 July in Ukraine will be early elections to the Parliament. The election campaign started the next day after it came into force Zelensky signed the decree about dissolution of the Verkhovna Rada of the eighth convocation. The basis for this decision was the absence in Parliament of the ruling coalition.
On the third day of his presidency Zelensky has submitted to Parliament a bill on electoral reform, which included the rejection of majoritarian electoral system and a lowering of the threshold for entry of parties in the Verkhovna Rada. Despite the promises of faction leaders to support the bill, MPs voted against to make the consideration of the bill in the agenda of the meeting.
