The Central election Commission (CEC) of Belarus has developed proposals to amend the Constitution. Reports about it “TUT.by”.
19 April President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko spoke about the necessity of changing the Constitution. In particular, the President noted the need to strengthen the Executive and legislative branches of government, and also made changes in the electoral system. However, he promised that the new Constitution “will not be accepted unceremoniously,” and possible changes will be introduced not earlier than in two years, when will is scheduled for 2019 and 2020 parliamentary and presidential elections. Lukashenko admitted that the new Constitution will be presented to them during the election campaign, if he decides to participate in them.
The current Constitution of Belarus was adopted in 1994. In 1996 the referendum was amended to include the redistribution of powers in favor of Executive power and the President. In 2004, by referendum of the Constitution was the clause limiting the number of terms of stay of one person on a post of the President.
