The European Union acknowledged that recently in Turkey the situation has deteriorated with the economy and the judicial system. This is stated in the regular report of the European Commission, assessing the prospects of Turkey’s accession to the EU.
“The Turkish judicial system is in the initial stage of readiness [to the EU]. Recommendations of previous reports were not taken into account and implemented, there has been a further significant deterioration”, — the document says. It is also noted the deplorable state of the economy. “Continued deterioration of the Turkish economy, raising concerns about the functioning of the market system,” — said the experts of the European Commission. They also said that the situation was worse in human rights and the rule of law. In the final part notes that the negotiations on entry into the EU have stalled.
In February, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that his country is not accepted in the EU due to the fact that she is Muslim.
Turkey is trying to join the European Union since 2005 and constantly talks. Some EU members — such as Germany — are against the accession of relatively poor Muslim country. Berlin, in particular, insists on finding the formulas of a privileged partnership, not including the joining of the European Union.
The relationship between the EU and Turkey deteriorated after the attempted armed coup in the country in July 2016. The European Union has criticized the reaction of the Turkish authorities and has suspended preparations for the opening of new chapters of the negotiation dossier on Turkey’s accession to the Union.
