The state Duma in the third final reading adopted amendments to the Criminal code toughening penalties for drunk drivers who killed people in road accidents, according to the website of the lower house of Parliament.
The paper proposed edit article 264 of the criminal code (“Violation of traffic rules and operation of vehicles”) and to increase from four to seven years the maximum sentence for causing grievous bodily harm.
In the case of the death of one person was expected to be punished by a term of up to seven and up to 12 years, with the death of two and more persons — till fifteen years of imprisonment (now up to nine). In addition, the draft law provides for tougher penalties for drunken accident in the subway, on rail, air, Maritime and inland waterway transport.
The bill submitted to the Duma in April and supported by all political factions, ministries and departments.
