The purchase by Turkey of Russian anti-aircraft missile complexes (AAMS) s-400 is an unacceptable risk for the United States. This was stated by acting Deputy assistant Secretary of defense for policy of Europe and NATO Andrew Winternitz, reports TASS.
According to him, “there are no measures that could have alleviated” the concerns of Washington because of such decisions of Ankara. Winternitz stressed that the commitments of Turkey in the framework of NATO and the purchase of s-400 are incompatible.
At the same time, the Pentagon did not predict the outcome of negotiations on this issue between the US and Turkey. “Let’s see what happens and then decide”, he added.
Earlier, the US said that Turkey offered several options in exchange for refusal from the purchase of s-400, and it was now up to the authorities of that country.
June 4 President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that his country will not abandon the acquisition of s-400.
The Americans on several occasions put forward the Turkish side an ultimatum: if Ankara will not refuse from purchasing Russian air defense system, Washington will not give her the fifth generation fighter F-35. In the United States and other NATO countries fear that if Turkey will be in service and the s-400 and F-35, the Russian radar systems will learn to calculate and track the American fighters.
