The former Patriarch of the unrecognized Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) Filaret has decided to convene the local Orthodox Cathedral of the CP to recover its activity. He stated this on the forum “For the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. For the Kiev Patriarchy!”, writes “BBC News Ukraine”.
“We convened a national Council which will confirm the decision of the Cathedral, which was December 15, 2018. So for us it is not mandatory. This we will show that the Kiev Patriarchate was, is and will be”, — said Filaret.
He added that the Cathedral will be held on June 20. In addition, supporters of the UOC-KP will write a letter to the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky with a request to protect her from any encroachment. Filaret stressed that he will be able to save the Kyiv Patriarchate. “Though he is small, but will grow a great Church” — said the Patriarch.
The Charter of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (PCU), where Filaret holds the position of honorary Patriarch, do not give him the right to convene the Cathedral. This can be done only by the head of the DNC Metropolitan Epiphanios.
Earlier June 11, Filaret announced that it would not accept the Tomos of autocephaly of the PCU, as not had the opportunity to read the document. According to him, if the UOC-KP knew the contents of the Tomos, nobody would vote for him, because it cements the transition from one addiction to another.
In may, the DNC declared illegal all orders of the leadership of the UOC-KP issued after receipt of the Tomos of autocephaly. The head of the DNC, Metropolitan Epiphanius recalled that the UOC-KP has ceased to exist after Unification of the Cathedral on 15 December 2018, at which the breakaway Church in Ukraine have United in the new structure, and became the Kiev Metropolitanate ptsu.
Ptsu was established on 15 December 2018 to the Unification Council, convened at the initiative of Patriarch Bartholomew and Petro Poroshenko, who was then President. The composition included mainly representatives of the UOC-KP and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC). The Ecumenical Patriarch has removed the anathema with their heads in October 2018, after which the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) broke Eucharistic communion with Constantinople. The head of the DNC was appointed by Metropolitan Epiphanius, and the leader of the breakaway Church received the status of honorary Patriarch of the DNC.
