The mayor of the Latvian capital Dainis turlais has criticized the people’s initiative to demolish the monument to Liberators of Riga. It is reported by RIA Novosti.

“When I hear the words, on the demolition of the monument, the burning of books and so forth, you are such a very gloomy picture of the story I still taught in school. I thought that in our time such people disappeared from the earth, these savages do not exist. But, it turns out, history repeats itself,” said the mayor.

On 14 March, the Saeima supported the petition for the dismantling of the monument. The authors of the petition believe that the monument to the Liberators — a symbol that reminds the Latvian people about the suffering in the years of “Soviet occupation”.
