Russia protested to Japan over the designation of the South Kuril Islands as Japanese territory in the materials for the G20 summit. It is reported RIA Novosti with reference to the Ministry of foreign Affairs.
“July 2 at the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Russia, diplomat of the Embassy of Japan in Russia was handed a note of protest about the use of the Japanese side in the coverage of the summit “group of twenty” materials, including audio-visual, in which the southern Kuril Islands designated as Japan’s territory”, — said the official representative of the Ministry Maria Zakharova.
It is known that at official video of the summit and the official channel of the Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe site was listed as Japanese.
23 June it became known that Japan is hardly prepared to conclude a final agreement on joint economic activities with Russia in the South Kuril Islands. The reason for the failure of the agreements are referred to the fact that Moscow and Tokyo in recent months, too much attention to the question of a peace Treaty between the two countries and did not pay enough attention to differences on the questions of joint activity on the disputed Islands. It clarifies that we are talking about waste disposal and tourism.
Japan does not recognize Russian sovereignty over the territory of the South Kuril Islands and insists on returning control of the Islands of Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Habomai. Moscow has consistently reminded about the legitimacy of Russia’s sovereignty over Kuril Islands: they withdrew from the Soviet Union following the Second world war.
The summit of “Big twenty” was held in Japan Osaka from 28 to 29 June 2019. It was attended by 20 of the largest national economies in the world.
