A court in the Belarusian city of Brest has sentenced 44-year-old local resident, whose identity was not disclosed. He was convicted for participation in a military conflict in the East of Ukraine on the side of the self-proclaimed militia Donetsk national Republic (DND), reports the Ukrainian “Radio Liberty”.

The convict participated in combat operations in 2015. According to him, he made the decision to go to war “for ideological reasons”. In DND, he was known under the call sign “Breeze”, served in the assault regiment of the marine corps, was Deputy commander of a combat vehicle and rocket launcher. In these positions he participated in the fighting in the village of Kominternovo of the volnovakhsky region of Donetsk region.

It is argued that in 2017 the convict flew to Syria, but any details about this episode of his life is not given. A year later he returned to the DNI, which was the ordinary militia, but by the end of 2018, he returned to Belarus.

According to the convict, he came to the KGB with guilt and stated that it will no longer participate in hostilities because of the “officers ‘ mess”, which is created in the DPR. Ultimately, the court sentenced him to two years imprisonment.

For the first time in Belarus, condemned the militia of DNR in the fall of 2017. It became 29-the summer inhabitant of Vitebsk region Alexey Ershov. He was convicted of participation in an armed formation of one of the warring parties on the territory of a foreign state. To prove the mercenaries — article 133 of the criminal code of Belarus — the court failed.

In April 2016, at the initiative of the KGB in the criminal code of Belarus was amended. Informed citizens of the country fighting on foreign territory, could judge only under article “Mercenarism”, but now behind bars can be, and those who fight not for money but for ideological beliefs.

The armed conflict in the Donbas began in the spring of 2014. Part of the region came under the control of Kiev after residents opposed the change of government and in a referendum supported the creation of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk national republics. In response, Ukrainian authorities launched a military operation.
