The key issue of the telephone conversation of President Vladimir Zelensky with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to release Ukrainian sailors arrested in Russia. This reports the press service of the Ukrainian leader.

“They also spoke about the return of other Ukrainian citizens who are on the territory of the Russian Federation”, — stated in a press release.

About the conversation the heads of Russia and Ukraine, which became the first contact between the two leaders after the election Zelensky President, earlier on July 11, said in the Kremlin. According to the press-Secretary of Russian leader Dmitry Peskov, the presidents discussed the settlement of the conflict in the South-East of Ukraine and return of individuals held by both sides, as well as the continuation of contacts in the Normandy format. The topic of the release of the sailors of the Sands is not mentioned.

Currently in Russia are under investigation 24 Ukrainian servicemen (22 sailors and two employees of security Service of Ukraine), who were detained along with three ships in the incident in the Kerch Strait in November 2018. Kiev considers them prisoners of war and calls for their return to Ukraine, a similar verdict in may this year issued a UN international Tribunal on law of the sea. Moscow believes that the issue is outside the jurisdiction of this court, and insists that the fate of the sailors must decide the investigation and trial in Russia.

The ships of the Ukrainian Navy, as stated by the Russian side violated the state border of the Russian Federation in the Black sea and dangerously maneuvered, without reacting to requirements of the authorities. In the end, the border guards, using weapons, detained the boat “Berdyansk” and “Nikopol” and the tug “Yana Kapu”. Vladimir Putin, commenting on the incident, said that it was a provocation in the interests of the then head of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, while preparing for presidential elections which he eventually lost.
