The EU will suspend various trade negotiations with Ankara and Turkey will freeze funding for the next year because of the illegal exploration of gas fields in waters of Cyprus. This is with reference to the draft of the official statement according to Reuters.
According to the Agency, this decision can still be reviewed and discussed in Brussels. “In light of the fact that Turkey continues the illegal drilling, the EU suspends negotiations on a transport agreement with the country and agrees not to conduct any more meetings at the highest level”, — stated in the draft.
It is also noted that if the Turkish authorities continue drilling, the European countries are ready to impose against them more stringent restrictive measures.
Who wished to remain anonymous European diplomat in an interview with the Agency expressed concerns about the statement. “We shouldn’t concern anyone except the people directly involved in the illegal actions. We act carefully because we need cooperation with Turkey on migration issues, NATO and terrorism,” Reuters quoted his words.
He also noted that some countries block depend on Turkey in energy issues, so expect large-scale economic sanctions is not worth it.
The island of Cyprus is divided into two States. One of them is an EU member, other, the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, formally an independent state, recognized only by Ankara. It was formed after, in 1974, Turkey sent its troops, which occupied about a third of its territory. The vast majority of the population is Turkish Cypriots.
