An international team of astronomers has discovered around a supermassive black holes in inactive galaxy NGC 3147 unusual obrazovanie. It is a thin accretion disk, whose existence in such an interstellar medium considered impossible. About it reported in a press release on Phys.org.
According to the researchers, the black holes present in those galaxies, like NGC 3147 (removed from the Earth at 130 million light-years) are considered “hungry.” Accretion disks should not be formed due to the small amount of captured material. However, in this case the disk is so close to the black hole that was suffering the effects of the strong curvature of space. It allows you to test some of the predictions of General and special relativity.
The matter in the disk moves with a speed exceeding 10 percent of the speed of light. In such extreme conditions one edge of the disk appears brighter and the other dimmer. In addition, the wavelength of light escaping from the gravitational well of the hole (it is 250 million times more massive than the Sun) greatly stretched to red regions of the spectrum.
According to scientists, they found a smaller version of a quasar, whose existence even was not supposed to. This finding refutes the current theoretical models predicting the behavior of galaxies with weak activity.
