Telephone conversation of presidents of Russia and Ukraine opens up the possibility of resuming negotiations in the Normandy format. This is stated in the command message the Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, reports TASS.
“Yesterday Zelensky called the President of the Russian Federation. This is the first step to the resumption of negotiations in the Normandy format. I hope that soon will release the captured sailors and other citizens of Ukraine, contained in the Russian Federation”, — stated in the message.
The conversation Putin and Zelensky became the first bilateral contact with the leaders. In the Kremlin reported that the presidents discussed the settlement of the conflict in the South-East of Ukraine, and also agreed to continue expert-level work on the return of persons held on both sides. The parties also agreed to continue contacts in the format of Normandy, said press Secretary of Russian leader Dmitry Peskov. He later added that the conversation between the two presidents was the trial and wore “fairly pragmatic” character.
In a press-service Zelensky said that the key topic of conversation was the release of the Ukrainian sailors, detained in November in the Kerch Strait.
The “Normandy format” — a diplomatic group consisting of representatives of Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France. In 2015, the leaders of these four countries agreed in Minsk document, which stipulates the introduction in the Donbass cease-fire and a legislative recognition of the special status of the region.
8 Jul Zelensky invited Putin to meet in Minsk with leaders of the United States, Germany, France and the UK, to discuss the status of the Crimea and the situation in the Donbass. Putin has declared its readiness to talk with the Ukrainian leader after the Kiev will form a government.
