The President of Moldova Igor Dodon intends to ask the Russian authorities for the discount on gas supplies in order to avoid higher fuel prices in the country. On Friday, July 12, reports “Interfax” with reference to the TV channel Moldova1.
The head of state intends to obtain a discount in the next four to five months. Moreover, the Moldovan President expressed hope that the Russian side does not refuse the transit of gas through Ukraine in 2020, as Moldova gets gas from Russia through the Ukrainian gas transportation system (GTS).
Dodon noted that the alternative source of gas for Moldova is the pipeline Ungheni H Chisinau, scheduled for commissioning only in 2021, thus, most likely, it will still be to do with Russian gas, which allowed to bypass Ukraine. The President noted that the problem for Moldova is very serious and it should be solved.
The current contract for gas transit through Ukrainian territory expires on 31 December 2019. Moscow and Kiev with the mediation of Brussels had tried to start negotiations to extend the agreement, however success they have not yet been successful. Russia last few years, she has focused on the refusal of the Ukrainian transit, this state-owned company Gazprom is implementing large-scale projects: “Nord stream-2”, which will connect Russia and Germany, as well as the “Turkish stream” gas that can flow into southern Europe, particularly in Bulgaria.
