Russia refused to discuss with Japan the possibility of transfer of two South Kuril Islands. It is reported by Kyodo, citing a source close to the negotiations.

It is reported that the Russian side categorically did not discuss this possibility because of fears associated with the Japanese-American military cooperation. According to the Agency, the second reason for the failure of the discussions on the transfer of territories was the motive for a possible reduction of support inside Russia.

1 July it was reported that the official video of the G20 summit of the Southern Kuril Islands were described as part of Japan. After Russia protested.

23 June it became known that Japan is hardly prepared to conclude a final agreement on joint economic activities with Russia in the South Kuril Islands. The reason for the failure of the agreements are referred to the fact that Moscow and Tokyo in recent months, too much attention to the question of a peace Treaty between the two countries and did not pay enough attention to differences on the questions of joint activity on the disputed Islands. It clarifies that we are talking about waste disposal and tourism.

Japan does not recognize Russian sovereignty over the territory of the South Kuril Islands and insists on returning control of the Islands of Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and group of small Islands Habomai. Moscow has consistently reminded about the legitimacy of Russia’s sovereignty over Kuril Islands: they withdrew from the Soviet Union following the Second world war.
