Former President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that Russia, most likely, will release of the Ukrainian seamen to the end of the week. My assumption was expressed on the air of ICTV channel.
According to him, the Russian authorities with 90% probability will give Kiev detained in November 2018 in the Kerch Strait Ukrainian citizens until Sunday, July 21. On this day in Ukraine elections to the Verkhovna Rada.
The politician reminded that according to the decision of the International Tribunal of the UN law of the sea, Moscow must release the sailors and to return the Ukrainian ships. According to Poroshenko, Russian President Vladimir Putin understands the consequences of failure to comply with this decision.
“As there are today absolutely clear mechanisms and on the restriction of navigation for Russian ships, and the responsibility for failure to comply with the arbitration award of the UN (…) to July 21, our boys should be home,” concluded the former Ukrainian leader.
July 11, the Kremlin reported on a telephone conversation with the Russian leader and his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky. According to some reports, the heads of state during a telephone conversation discussed the possibility of gestures of good will in the near future and the exchange of detained persons.
Currently in Russia are under investigation 24 Ukrainian servicemen (22 sailors and two employees of security Service of Ukraine), who were detained along with three ships in the incident in the Kerch Strait in November 2018. Kiev considers them prisoners of war and demands to return to Ukraine, a similar verdict in may this year issued a UN international Tribunal on law of the sea. Moscow believes that the issue is outside the jurisdiction of this court, and insists that the fate of the sailors must decide the investigation and trial in Russia.
