Former American boxer Pernell Whittaker died in hospital due to injuries received in the accident. This was reported by the correspondent of 13News Eli Weselton in Twitter account.
The evening of July 14 a 55-year-old Pernell got hit by a car. The driver of the car fled the scene and waited for police to arrive. The former athlete was taken to hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.
Whittaker has achieved good results in Amateur Boxing. On account of his gold at the Olympics in 1984 (in the light weight category) and also winning the world championship and pan American games.
After the victory at the Olympic games Whittaker made his debut in professional Boxing. In 1990, he achieved the status of absolute world champion. In 2002, the Ring magazine put Whittaker on 10-th place in the list of 100 best fighters in the last 80 years. On account of his 40 victories (17 of them by knockout), four losses and one draw.
