Efficient conventional and US nuclear forces are an effective way to deter “Russian aggression”. This was stated by the candidate on a post of the head of the Pentagon mark Esper in its written response to questions from lawmakers. The document is published on the website of the Committee of the Senate of the United States Congress for the armed forces.

“In my opinion, the maintenance of efficient conventional and nuclear forces together with our allies, is one of the most effective deterrents against Russian aggression,” said Esper.

Mark Esper is the main contender for the post of Minister of defense, however, until his nomination considered in the Senate, he can’t lead the Department. Now this post holds temporarily the Minister of the naval forces of Richard Spencer. New Pentagon chief needs to be appointed before the end of July.

On 3 July, Russia officially suspended the Treaty on the elimination of intermediate and shorter-range missiles (INF Treaty). The relevant law was signed by President Vladimir Putin. The first from the Treaty came from Washington. It was explained that the decision was taken because of violations of the terms of the agreement with Moscow. Russian authorities rejected the accusations, calling on States to provide evidence.

The INF Treaty was concluded between Moscow and Washington in December 1987. The agreement forbade the USSR and the USA to produce, test and deploy ballistic and cruise land-based missiles of medium (1,000 to 5,500 kilometers) and small (from 500 to 1000 km) range, and was obliged to liquidate the appropriate launcher.
