Israeli archaeologists came to the conclusion that the prehistoric settlement that was discovered five kilometers to the West of Jerusalem, is one of the largest ancient cities of the stone age. Age of the metropolis of 10.5 thousand years. About it reports Reuters.
Researchers estimate, in the settlement lived 2-3 thousand people. Before the discovery it was thought that this area was uninhabited in the time period when early humans went from hunting and gathering to a more settled way of life and agriculture. However, in the course of excavations the scientists found large buildings, streets and cemeteries, evidence of advanced urban planning.
Also found were the vault, which contained the seeds of legumes, particularly lentils and chickpeas. This indicates a relatively high level of development of agriculture. In addition, animal bones show that the inhabitants specialized in the breeding of sheep, and hunting have faded into the background. Among other artifacts, researchers have uncovered thousands of arrowheads, axes for chopping down trees, sickle blades and knives.
