Scientists at the Institute of atmospheric physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences came to the conclusion that extremely strong volcanic eruption can interrupt the process of regeneration of the ozone layer of the Earth. About it reported in a press release on Phys.org.

To assess the impact of volcanic gases on the stratosphere, the researchers used chemical-climate and chemical-transport model. It turned out that if the content of ozone-depleting substances (S) at the moment will be equal to the half of their amount in the atmosphere in 1990-ies, the level of ozone will decrease by six percent worldwide and 6.4% in the tropical latitudes.

If you remove all anthropogenic sources S and retain only the natural sources, the eruption of the volcano will lead to a global ozone depletion of 2.5 percent, and in the tropics of 4.4 per cent. However, as a result of the disaster in the atmosphere can be thrown more Halogens which are directly involved in the destruction of ozone molecules leading to more serious consequences than expected from the model.

It remains unclear exactly which volcanoes affect the evolution of living organisms and the environment in the Paleozoic era, when the ozone layer was relatively weak and thin.
