The law about the exclusivity of the Ukrainian language could be softened after the elections to the Verkhovna Rada. This is reported by “Izvestia”, citing sources familiar with the situation.
According to the interlocutor of the edition, to adjust the law wants the command of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. Relief can be introduced for the Russian and other languages of national minorities in certain regions and in certain fields of use. Ukrainian language will remain the only state.
Mitigation the law would allow Zelensky strengthen its positions in the negotiations on conflict settlement in the Donbass. The President will be able to confirm one of the campaign slogans of a wrong to divide the citizens “on ukrainomovnyh and Russian-speaking”. In addition, the concessions will improve the relationship of the authorities with other national minorities.
The law “On ensuring the functioning of Ukrainian as the state language”, providing for the exclusive use of the Ukrainian language in most spheres of life, entered into force on 16 July. Language will become mandatory for public authorities and local governments, educational institutions, hospitals and service sectors. It will be required to speak in court, the army, law enforcement, advertising, during election campaigns and referendums. Officials will enter the exam on the knowledge of Ukrainian.
The country will set up special “language Commission” that will monitor the use of the Ukrainian language. For violation of the law provided for fines of 200 to 700 untaxed minimum incomes of citizens, that is, from 3.4 thousand to 11.9 thousand (128-450 dollars).
