The European Parliament called on Russia to release all “illegally imprisoned Ukrainians.” This is stated in the relevant resolution that was adopted on Thursday, July 18. Voted for the document 458 MPs voted against 80, 89 abstained.
Deputies indicated that Moscow should “unconditionally and without further delay release all Ukrainian citizens, illegally and arbitrarily detained in Russia, and in the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories”. Among them called the Ukrainian sailors arrested after the incident in the Kerch Strait in the autumn of 2018, and also representatives of the Crimean Tatar community, who were conducting a picket on red square.
In addition, the resolution stipulates the requirement to the Russian authorities “to cease all forms of harassment against all environmental activists and human rights defenders”. They must be allowed to carry out their work without any interference, deputies reported.
The European Parliament also adopted two resolutions. They say that the Hong Kong government should revoke the law on extradition to mainland China, and the U.S. government must cease to divide the families of migrants at the border and to provide them with water, food and shelter.
Currently in Russia are under investigation 24 Ukrainian servicemen (22 sailors and 2 officers of the security Service of Ukraine), who were detained along with three ships in the incident in the Kerch Strait in November 2018. They are accused of illegal crossing of the Russian border in an organized group.
Kiev considers its citizens and prisoners of war needs to return to Ukraine, a similar verdict in may issued a UN international Tribunal on law of the sea. Moscow notes that this question is not within the jurisdiction of this court, and insists that the fate of the sailors must decide the investigation and trial in Russia. 17 Jul Lefortovsky court of Moscow has decided to extend the arrest of the detained Ukrainians to 24 October.
