Kiev’s plans to provide the Ukrainian nationality as a second ethnic Ukrainians — an internal affair of the country, said the press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov. It is quoted by TASS on Thursday, July 18.
He stressed that the decision of the Russian President on simplified obtaining Russian citizenship for residents of Donetsk and Lugansk regions of Ukraine is an internal affair of Russia. Peskov said that the need for this decision was a long time coming.
On 18 July the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky was commissioned to develop a simplified mechanism for obtaining passports for ethnic Ukrainians from “friendly countries seeking to join the development of their historical homeland”.
It was a response to the decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin on 17 July, on simplification of obtaining Russian citizenship for all residents of Donetsk and Lugansk regions of Ukraine. In April, Putin has simplified the issuance of Russian passports to residents of areas that are actually under the control of the breakaway republics of Donbass. Kiev has condemned the decision and urged the international community to intervene in the situation.
