Atlantic walrus observed in the Bay of the White sea first time in many years

In the waters of Kandalaksha Bay in the White sea noticed the Arctic walrus. The last time this sea animal seen here 16 years ago. About it to “Komsomolskaya Pravda” told the researcher of the Kandalaksha reserve Ekaterina Tolmacheva.

According to her, the beast was noticed by the inspector of the Kandalaksha nature reserve, Basil Vadicov. This happened back in June, but the public is not reported. “Previously, walrus were common inhabitants of the White and Barents sea, but thanks to the active Providence now, they meet quite rare,” she said, noting that often they were met in Arkhangelsk region: in the Throat, Funnel and the Mezen Bay of the White sea.

The last time a walrus was seen by the staff of the biological station “Kartesh” in the Chupa inlet in 2003. “First, he was very active and then it turned out that he was wounded. Unfortunately, the fate of the animal is unknown – it is likely that the walrus could have died”, — said the interlocutor of the edition.

The Atlantic walrus is listed in the Red book of the Murmansk region and Russia, its population is steadily declining. Hunting for him is forbidden since 1950-ies.
