Lukashenko hoped for a European future

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko expressed hope for building a safe and confident future in Europe and the joint discussion of issues on the international agenda. This is stated in his congratulatory message, Ursula von der Leyen, with the election to the post of President of the European Commission, published on the website of the head of state on Friday, July 19.

“I look forward to further deepening of political dialogue and content of the new practical content of the bilateral cooperation between Belarus and the EU in trade, investment and humanitarian areas”, — stated in the message.

The Belarusian leader also noted the professional experience and personal qualities von der Leyen. In his opinion, they will help in the process of consolidation of the countries on the basis of such principles as peace, independence and sustainable development.

On 16 July the European Parliament adopted the von der Leyen, the former German Minister of defense, head of the European Commission. She became the first woman in this position. Her candidacy was supported 383 deputies, against have voted 327 members of Parliament. To win she needed to earn a minimum of 374 votes.

He thanked MEPs for their trust. She also promised on Twitter that he would defend the rights of women in office.

The leaders of EU countries agreed to submit for consideration of the candidacy of von der Leyen at the beginning of July. Later she announced that she will retire from the post of Minister of defence of Germany, regardless of the results of the vote in the European Parliament, to “devote their energies to service for the benefit of Europe.”
