Quality seasonal berries, such as strawberries, raspberries, currants and gooseberries, can be distinguished by the green stalks and leaves and uniform color. This is stated in the guidelines for selection of delicious and ripe seasonal berries, which was developed by the specialists of Roskoshestvo together with Berry Union, TASS.
According to experts, the berries in one batch should be of similar size, shape and color. Ripened in a natural way and not overseasoned berry has a stronger flavor. The Russians call when buying seasonal berries to pay attention to their packing. Experts say that the softer the berry, the smaller should be the container in which it is stored and sold.
In particular, suitable for strawberry packaging from 250 grams to one kilogram for black currant and blueberries — from 500 grams to one kilogram for raspberries — a maximum of 500 grams. “In large boxes and crates of berries crushed each other, cracking up allot of juice, quickly covered with mold and rot,” said Berry in the Union.
The experts warned from buying the berries, if they release moisture or leaking juice. According to them, this suggests that the berries are already corrupted and will eventually rot or are covered with mold in a matter of hours. Also you should avoid product with a musty odor or characteristic smell of a wine fermentation.
The chance to meet fresh and fully ripened products is the highest in its own outlets manufacturers or directly into the plantation. However, if such points are not near, then you need to buy berries in large stores with manufacturers supply contracts, but not in markets where product origin is hard to trace. Wash berries right before eating, because the moisture also contributes to the rapid deterioration of the product.
