The President of Russia Vladimir Putin sent his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad a congratulatory message in honor of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries. The text of the telegram published on the official Kremlin website on Saturday, July 21.
The Russian leader expressed hope that “the final defeat of the forces of terror on the Syrian land” for future cooperation. In his letter, Putin confirmed that Moscow will continue to support Damascus “in defense of national sovereignty and territorial integrity”, as well as in the reconstruction after the war.
Assad in a congratulatory message expressed “on his behalf and on behalf of the Syrian people’s commitment and pride of the historical friendship with Russia”, reported on the website of the presidential administration of Syria in Facebook. He also confirmed the intention to further develop relations with Russia.
On June 20 in a straight line Putin said that Russia must first to help Syria in the issue of a political settlement and the creation of a constitutional Committee. According to the Russian leader, this work should be addressed in conjunction with other involved in the conflict countries — Turkey, Iran and the United States.
The civil war in Syria began in spring 2011. The main participants of the conflict — government forces, acting on the side of the incumbent President Bashar al-Assad, the so-called moderate opposition and Islamist groups. The opposition support the United States and European countries, Russia is helping Assad government.
