Plans of Minsk and Moscow for the launch of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (Belarusian NPP) have become a major threat to Europe. According to the MP, the launch of the NPP will be “a huge blow for the whole of Europe”. To prevent this, Lithuania should make every effort to counter this “threatening the project,” he said. In particular, Vilnius should strengthen the energy security of the Baltic States and to force the EU to stop ignoring the danger that emanates from the station.
He also notes that Lithuania should lobby for a change in the climate goals of the EU, which at the moment is limited only by strengthening the single market and the transition to a climate neutral economy.
Earlier, the Lithuanian foreign Ministry has sent the IAEA a letter with a request to influence the Belarusian leadership, persuading him not to run the Russian-Belarusian nuclear power plant in Ostrovets.
The Belarusian nuclear power plant project on construction of a nuclear power plant type AES-2006. The main contractor is entering into structure “Rosatom” the company “Atomstroyexport”. Russia has provided Belarus a loan in the amount of up to ten billion dollars, which cancels 90 percent of the costs of construction. The station will consist of two power units with a total capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts. The first unit is scheduled for commissioning in 2019, the second — in 2020.
The Belarusian NPP is being constructed in 18 km from the town of Ostrovets in the Grodno region. The capital of Lithuania Vilnius is separated from the construction site of the nuclear power station 50 kilometers.
