Scientists at the University of Harrisburg in the US was found inside fossilized mollusks of times Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs is evidence of a collision of an unknown asteroid with the Earth. This publication reports Science Alert.
The researchers found dozens of glass balls of a diameter not exceeding several millimeters, containing silicon dioxide (silica). These “beads” are formed at high temperature in volcanic or industrial activities, and also as a result of falling meteorites. Fossils containing balls, formation Tamiami belong in Florida, US state. Their age spans the time interval from 5 million to 12 thousand years ago.
Similar formations, formed during a meteorite impact, called microtektites. If this origin is confirmed, then these balls will be the first microtektites found in Florida, and first discovered in the shells of fossilized mollusks.
However, fossils of animals that contain “beads” were located in four different geological layers belong to different periods of time. Scientists believe that a possible cause may be erosion of microtektites for thousands of years or just a few falls of large meteorites on the territory of Florida, which are not yet known. Further research is complicated by the fact that the quarry where you found the shellfish, is currently used for housing.
