U.S. Secretary of state Mike Pompeo wrote on Twitter that he wanted to visit Iran and hold negotiations, but the authorities refused to accept it.
Pompeo stressed that he intended “to speak directly to the Iranian people.” The Secretary of state noted in the post, the official accounts of the Minister of foreign Affairs of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif and Supreme leader Ali Khamenei. He recalled that, Zarif arrived in the United States and had the right to speak freely.
“Is the position of the Khamenei regime is so bad that he can’t allow me to do the same thing in Tehran? What happens if people hear the truth fully and without censorship?” asked Pompeo.
In July it became known that the United States was ready to impose personal sanctions against Zarif, however, decided to postpone the decision. Against the imposition of these sanctions were including Pompeo.
Relations between the US and Iran escalated a year ago. In early may of 2018 trump announced the unilateral withdrawal of Washington from a nuclear deal in 2015 and the renewal of the sanctions against Tehran. New package of restrictive measures, the United States entered into force in November.
