The Secretary of national security and defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine Oleksandr danylyuk said about the need to reform the activities of the security Service of Ukraine (SBU) fundamentally. The position he expressed in an interview with “channel 24”.
Danyluk said that the SBU must become more powerful in the field of counterintelligence. “That is the struggle against espionage activities in Ukraine is a key function which they must fulfill,” he said.
NSDC Secretary also stated the need to remove from the scope of the Agency’s activities are not “naturally” functions. Among them he listed the investigation of economic crimes and the fight against corruption.
“The reform of the SBU and the rest of the reform absolutely no sense because the SBU is historically embedded in many processes. What should happen: the security service should be powerful, but in one key area,” he concluded.
Deputy head of delegation of the European Union in Kiev Annika Weidemann previously stated that reform of the SBU is one of the main reforms that need to hold the new government of Ukraine. In her opinion, the functions of the Agency is required to limit the counterintelligence, counterterrorism and the protection of state secrets.
“At the same time, the SBU needs to lose functions in the field of economic and organized crime”, — said Weidemann, adding that reform should be done as soon as possible.
