Russian satellites “Electro-L” №2 and “meteor-M” №2 due to problems do not work in full, RIA Novosti reported.
The Agency, referring to the materials research center of space Hydrometeorology “Planeta”, writes that the main device of the first spacecraft (geostationary multispectral scanning device MSU-GS), designed to obtain multispectral images of the Earth’s surface, has limited functionality due to the inoperability of the channel with a spectral range of 12 micrometers.
The second spacecraft is impossible to use the module for temperature and humidity sounding of the atmosphere (microwave radiometer) mtvza-TN and on-Board radar complex “Severyanin-M”.
In February, the head of “Roshydromet” Maxim Yakovenko said that Russia does not have its own meteorological satellites.
In January, the Director of the Institute of nuclear physics of Moscow state University Mikhail Panasyuk said that in earth orbit are just two major Russian research satellite, but they both are not fully functioning.
In April 2018 in Russia recognized the inability to create their own satellites.
Meteorological satellite “Electro-L” №2 was launched in December of 2015 from the Baikonur cosmodrome using rocket “Zenit-2ЅБ” and upper stage “Fregat-SB”. “Meteor-M” №2 was launched in July 2014 from the Baikonur cosmodrome with the help of “Soyuz-2.1 b” and “Frigate”.
