New floods in the Irkutsk region and major forest fires in Siberia may be linked. This was announced by the head of the energy program of the Russian branch of Greenpeace, Vladimir Chuprov, reports Sign.
According to him, the cause of the hot weather in Siberia is the so-called blocking anticyclone — a huge mass of warm air that block penetration into the region of colder and moist air. “As a result of precipitation, which had to shed the rain in the Krasnoyarsk region, comes in the form of abnormal rain on the periphery of the blocking anticyclone” — said Chuprov.
He also noted that recently the frequency of blocking anticyclones on the territory of Russia increases. In order to avoid the negative consequences of climate change, it is necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, restore forests, prevent fires, and to abandon the use of oil and coal, he said.
Strong flood occurred in the Irkutsk region in the end of June. In the result of incident 25 people were killed and another 11 were missing. The flood was caused by heavy rainfall and rise of rivers. In the zone of flooding hit almost 11 thousand houses in 107 villages. A month later, the situation in the region deteriorated again. On 28 July, the water level in the river Iya in Tulunskiy district exceeded the critical level of 700 centimeters. In this regard, the impounded areas of a day evacuated more than a thousand people.
Since the beginning of July in Siberia and Yakutia raging forest fires. A fire caused by abnormal heat to plus 30 degrees, dry thunderstorms without rain and windy weather. The most difficult situation in the Irkutsk region (137 fires) and Krasnoyarsk region (94 fire). The total area of forest fires has increased to 3 million hectares.
