Ukraine missed its chance to become a member of the European Union and to join NATO. With the corresponding statement was made by German political scientist Alexander Rahr on the YouTube channel “Union of bloggers of Ukraine”.
According to him, Kiev could join the EU if conducted the necessary reforms over the last 15 years. In the early 2000s, an Association of European States were richer and stronger and the chances of Ukraine getting into it was more. “[Now] European Union enlargement to the East will not. Just in the Ukraine should understand it,” said Rahr.
Speaking about the possibility of Kiev to become a NATO member, the political scientist said that this step will lead to confrontation with Russia. “I cannot imagine, under any circumstances, to date, to imagine that a country like Ukraine can become a member of the EU or NATO,” he said. Rahr added that Europeans will never accept Ukraine, while it is “unreformed state.”
Earlier, Ukraine’s chances of joining NATO praised the former U.S. Secretary of state Condoleezza rice. According to her, at the moment, Ukraine’s membership in NATO is not feasible because of the difficulties of obtaining consensus.
In February, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed amendments to the country’s Constitution, which enshrines the country’s course towards membership in NATO and the EU. In January, foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin acknowledged that in the near future Ukraine will not be able to join NATO and the EU. According to him, it is a question of the medium-term prospects.
