Ukraine has every right to cut off the channel by which water was supplied to the Crimean Peninsula. This was stated by the permanent representative of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea Anton Korynevych in your Facebook account.

“The Dnieper river flows through the territory of the Crimea. Ukraine has not blocked the channel of the river Dnepr, and blocked processing facility (channel), which is located on the territory of Ukraine. That Ukraine has the full right,” said Korenevich.

He added that by all accounts, fresh water for the needs of the population of Crimea is enough. In addition, the representative of the Ukrainian President stressed that “the occupying state itself must be responsible for ensuring the occupied territory with all the necessary resources”.

12 August it was reported about the plans of the Crimean authorities to appeal to the leadership of Russia with a request to initiate negotiations with Ukraine about the admission of the waters of the Dnieper to the Peninsula. The permanent representative of the region under the Russian President Georgi Muradov noted that it is not water belonging Ukraine, is the water coming from the Russian territory.

In 2014, after the reunification of the Crimea with Russia began to experience problems with water supply because Ukraine stopped the supply of the Dnieper water in the North-Crimean channel. The canal, which was built in the 1960-ies to provide water from the Dnieper dry and arid territories of the Kherson region and Crimea, covers 90 percent of the needs of the Peninsula.

Crimea became a Russian region in March 2014 after a referendum in which the overwhelming number of residents voted in support of this decision. Ukraine and Western countries consider the Peninsula annexed territory. Moscow indicates that the transition of the Crimea under its jurisdiction conform to the norms of international law.
