The incident on the morning of 8 August explosion at a military site near Severodvinsk (Arkhangelsk oblast) has occurred during the test, “advanced accelerator” on the liquid rocket engine (LRE) with the “atomic battery” and is not associated with the missile “Petrel”, according to “Izvestia”.

The newspaper, citing a source in the defense Ministry, the two sides in the military-industrial complex (MIC) and expert, says that this “nuclear battery” is designed to replace the traditional battery, which provides thermostatically (constant temperature of the fuel, oxidizer and all systems of the accelerator) and initiation (the explosion after mixing of the components of the fuel) rocket engine.

These “nuclear batteries”, according to the publication, are the development of the technology of radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs), visually representing a “box of the meter on the meter” with a lead pack that “with the destruction creates minimal contamination within a radius of 30-40 meters” do not pose much of a threat to the environment.

In August it was reported that the incident occurred on the 45th State Central naval test range of the naval fleet (Navy) of Russia, located near the village of nyonoksa in the White sea coast about 30 kilometers from Severodvinsk, may be associated with the testing elements of the future hypersonic missile “Zircon” in the fuel component for liquid propulsion system (PS) which uses catalytic additives, or developed low-flying stealth cruise missile with global range, “Petrel”, which should be equipped with small nuclear power plant (NPP).

According to official figures, the incident associated with engineering support of isotopic power sources for liquid propulsion system (DU), caused the death of seven people.
