Scientists at the Australian national University have found signs of an ancient reservoir of magma in the bowels of the Earth, whose age is comparable with the age of the moon. About it reported in a press release on Phys.org.
The researchers analyzed the isotopic composition of helium, which is contained in 23 samples of superdeep diamonds thrown to the surface by strong volcanic eruptions. The majority of diamonds formed at depths of 150-230 kilometers under the earth’s crust, and are then carried by the flow of magma. In rare cases, on the surface submitted the diamonds formed at depths of 230-800 kilometers.
It turned out that the composition of the isotopes inside the diamonds was typical of gases that existed before the collision of the moon and Earth. It is known that after its formation the planet was under attack by other space bodies, which completely changed its structure and composition. However, the researchers suspected that the bowels could be the reservoir of the substance, whose composition has not changed over the last four billion years.
