The return of Russia in “Group of seven” dependent on progress in peace talks on the situation in Ukraine. This was stated by French diplomatic source, Reuters reports.
“We took note that the Americans want to reintegrate them [the Russians] in the following year. Ukraine is extremely important”, — said the diplomat.
At the same time, he neither confirmed nor denied the information that the President of France Emmanuel macron suggested to call Russia at the summit “the Big seven” in 2020. Reuters notes that earlier the head of the Republic stressed the need for progress in resolving the conflict in Ukraine to return to Moscow.
Earlier it was reported that the President of the United States Donald trump agreed with the proposal of the Macron to invite Russia to the summit next year. It is expected that the American leader to discuss the issue with other world leaders.
Prior to that, trump said that much more appropriate it would be to see Russia in the “Big eight”. He noted that he would support a proposal because “many of the things discussed in the G7, touch Russia.”
The G8 has ceased to exist in 2014 — after the annexation of Crimea to Russia. Then the leaders of major world powers has refused to participate in the summit that Russia, as chair, was held in Sochi. Instead, in Brussels, a meeting of “seven” — G7 (France, UK, USA, Germany, Japan, Italy and Canada). The summit is also attended by the presidents of the EU Council and the European Commission.
