Ukraine was forced to abandon nuclear weapons because of the threat of economic sanctions from the United States, said the first Ukrainian leader Leonid Kravchuk in the air “24 channel”. A video posted on YouTube.
“We put it right before a choice — or we put nuclear weapons, or we will have economic pressure and will impose sanctions,” — said Kravchuk. According to him, the decision was influenced by the internal problems of the country in terms of Economics, as funds for the maintenance of a huge army was not.
In June of last year Leonid Kravchuk said that in 1994 the US threatened Ukraine with isolation in the event of the non-aligned Kiev to Budapest Memorandum. According to policy, the United States demanded that Ukraine’s renunciation of nuclear weapons for three reasons: weapons on the territory of Ukraine was deployed by the Soviet Union, all of it was aimed at the United States, Ukraine was not able to replace nuclear warheads. “They were manufactured in Russia. In 1994, Kiev, Moscow, London and Washington signed the Budapest Memorandum, according to which the Ukrainian side refused placed on the territory of Soviet nuclear weapons. Command of nuclear forces on the territory of the former Soviet republics was carried out by joint forces of the CIS.
