The new head of the European Commission from 1 November 2019 Ursula von der Leyen called for the acceleration of integration of Ukraine and Georgia. It is reported by RIA Novosti.
It is noted that it is necessary to identify a “realistic framework” of cooperation with these States. The integration of these countries will deal with the Hungarian EU Commissioner Laszlo Trocsanyi. It is emphasized that its task will be to support reforms in Ukraine and promoting the EU’s position on maintaining the integrity of this country. In addition, he will have to set new goals of the program “Eastern partnership” by the middle of next year.
“Eastern partnership” programme of the European Union, the main goal of which is development of integration relations of the EU with Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.
The Association agreement between Ukraine and the European Union signed in 2014, but it has not come into force immediately, because it required the approval of all member countries of the EU. In 2017, the last remaining state — the Netherlands — have ratified the document. To do this, at the request of Amsterdam, the agreement was amended, according to which Kiev was denied the right to become a candidate for membership in the European Union, as well as providing military guarantees and additional funding. The agreement does not allow the Ukrainians to live and work in the EU.
