The head of the office of the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky Andrey Bogdan stated that he tried several times to contact the head of administration of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin Anton Vaino. The official said in an interview with Ukrainian edition of “bi-Bi-si”.
According to Bogdan, he called his counterpart five times, but the conversation between the two officials did not take place. As noted by the head office of the Ukrainian President, the inability of the contacts in August due to the fact that Vaino was on vacation. “And in September, his secretaries said that he did not have the authority to talk to me,” added Bogdan.
He also noted that he had not tried to contact anyone else from the Russian leadership, including supervising questions of Donbass by the Russian presidential aide Vladislav Surkov. It explained that “according to diplomatic rules only be in contact with their counterparts”.
The head of the office of the President of Ukraine expressed satisfaction with the existing contacts between Zelensky and Putin. In his words, “the essence and tone” their conversations “give hope for the end of the military conflict”.
Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky called up three times. On 11 July between Putin and Zelensky at the initiative of Kyiv was held the first telephone conversation. The Kremlin then announced that he had discussed the exchange of prisoners and agreed to continue contacts in the “Normandy format”. In August it became known that during the conversation, the presidents agreed to exchange prisoners.
The second time Zelensky called Putin on 7 August. The topic of conversation was the death of four Ukrainian military in the Donbass after the establishment of the indefinite truce. According to the President of Ukraine, he appealed to the colleague with the request “to affect the other side” to stop “killing people” and again raised the issue of the return of Ukrainian prisoners.
The last conversation between two politicians was held September 7 in the day of the exchange of prisoners. Then the leaders of the two countries evaluated the implementation of agreements reached earlier and discussed the further settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.
