The ex-President of Ukraine and leader of the “European solidarity” Petro Poroshenko has called for elections in the Donbass. He said this in the Verkhovna Rada, reports Ukrainian edition “news of Donbass”.
According to Poroshenko, elections in the uncontrolled territories of Kiev can go only after in the region will be set to the security mode which will provide the UN peacekeeping mission. The former President believes that the decision should be taken by the Security Council of the UN.
Speaking about the actions of the peacekeepers, Poroshenko said that they will have to disarm the armed forces of the breakaway Donetsk and Lugansk national republics, to ensure the withdrawal of heavy equipment and take control of the Russian-Ukrainian border. In these circumstances, as the ex-President, in the Donbass will be able to return the displaced persons, the Ukrainian party and the media. Only in such circumstances, he said, the elections in these areas can be considered democratic.
Earlier, Poroshenko said that if Russia really wanted to restore peace in the Donbass, then the first signal would be a return to Ukraine control of the border. The current actions of Moscow, he calls “consolidating the springboard for further advance”.
The armed conflict in the Donbass lasts for five years. In April 2014, the Ukrainian government began a military operation against the breakaway Donetsk and Lugansk national republics (DND and LNR), which have declared independence from Kiev after the change of the Central government.
To solve the crisis trying with the Minsk agreements, which in February 2015 has been agreed by the leaders of “Norman Quartet” — the diplomatic group composed of representatives of Germany, Russia, France and Ukraine on settling the situation in Donbas. They, in particular, stipulate an immediate ceasefire, the withdrawal of heavy weapons, start a dialogue about the local elections, the resumption of payment of pensions, the adoption of a law prohibiting the prosecution and punishment involved in the conflict persons, as well as document on the special status of the region.
